After consulting with my friends , I found their responses to be similar regardless of gender or race. Majority of my male companions have been in and challenged to numerous fights whether it was in school or in their neighborhood. These altercations were against another male and they believed that what was at stake during that time was their image. Collectively, my male friends argued that during the stage of adolescence the male’s ego and adrenaline levels are at an ultimate high. This combination made it very difficult for them to back down or step away from a fight because males especially had to uphold a culture of honor. Aronson (2013) states that a culture of honor “is when a man’s reputation is on the line, requiring him to respond to the threat” (p.333). The idea of fighting fire with fire was the mentality that all my friends expressed, it was unacceptable to walk away from a fight or lose a fight. Not only did they have to deal with the pressures from friends but also their families. A loss battle meant more than just not being able to defeat their opponent but it was a test of survival.
