Acceptance is a vital part of society from the early ages until today. No person likes to be the outsider when they are attempting to fit in and gain something from being a part of a group. This can be as simple as having friends to hang out with to being a part of a squad in the Army. Social acceptance is something that most people take for granted or find easy. It is not easy for all people to be accepted because of things like race, religion or cultural differences. If a person wanted to be a part of a motorcycle club they would have to own a motorcycle. The consumer part comes in when competing within a group to continue being a part of the group and having friendly competition. This would not be the case if no one participated keeping up with the neighbors. This drives acceptance from a unique angle, one that relies on possessions to be a part of a particular group. Without whatever the particular item is, a person needs to have it in order to be accepted.
Rejection drives acceptance through forcing, pushing, or coercing someone to succeed or have a particular attribute, or again, a possession. Nobody likes rejection, although, some are more willing to accept it than others. Rejection is a part of life and will continue to define people as a society. Without rejection there likely would be no drive to succeed and be accepted.
There are many forms of acceptance, from getting into a dream college, to landing a very lucrative, highly desired job. Rejection, as well as competition, drives our need as a people to be accepted into society. Competing or keeping up with the neighbors adds to this definition of being an accepted member of the neighborhood as well as a certain group of friends.
