Reflection On My Improvement Of Academic Writing

Improved Essays
This portfolio will exemplify my current improvement of academic writing during the past two months. Receiving great feedback and suggestions from my peers and doing research has helped me strengthen my points, and allows me to recognize and understand certain habits used in my writing. My focus on this course in the beginning started with the question, how do I keep my focus and become a better writer by staying on track within my main focus and not move from one point to another? I wrote in my initial introduction that my writing style was similar to a kangaroo in that I often find myself hopping between my points and sometimes lose the main point that I am writing about. Having excellent feedback from my peers, positive and negative, …show more content…
I also would add a few quotes and properly cite the source and move on to the next topic. My ability to learn from my peers and see my writing through another person’s point of view has changed the way I look at writing now. First, I want to make sure I am providing a quality product that shows my best effort if I am going to have someone take the time to read and give me feedback and ideas on ways I can improve my writing. Next, I find that giving and receiving feedback is actually fun and I can see the development and improvement in my writing, and it is a result of having peers that care and are honest in their evaluation of my writing. An example of seeing my writing improve, is clearly shown from my first essay in which I received a below standard rating on my focus criteria because my overall point was unclear and confusing. My final sentence of my introduction paragraph reads “he seems to be stating that the teacher is teaching a totally alien or foreign concept that cannot be understood.” This final sentence leaves the reader confused about where this sentence fits in with my main topic. My second essay I received a standard rating and received feedback that my writing was focused around a central message was simple to understand and not confusing. I was pleasantly surprised receiving feedback from another student with feedback to an essay I submitted after the deadline and for someone to take the time to give me honest and constructive feedback when they didn’t need to was very

Generally, my overall goal for this course, as I stated in week one, was to “make my writing more orderly, less time-consuming, and more efficient overall.” As I reflect on the progress I have made, I recognize that I have had some success in meeting this goal, although I still have room for improvement. Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

No matter how many times I’ll have to write one, reflections are always difficult. They make you look at yourself and your work and dissect every good and bad aspect of it. Sometimes it’s hard because just the task of analyzing one’s own work can be tricky, but my personal biggest issue is learning how to fix what I find specifically wrong. Part of this is due to my own writing style, along with the bad habits that come with it. However, throughout this class, I have learned more about how to relay my ideas more concisely to my audience and in a more summarized form.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout high school, I have noticed an overall growth in my writing skills. The skills that I have learned since freshman year has helped me grow as a writer. In the beginning of Freshman year my writing had limited vocabulary, informal expressions, and it lacked proper organization. My English teacher encouraged me to use a thesaurus and to read more books to help broaden my range of vocabulary and sentence structure. Therefore, these resources helped me build a vast range of vocabulary including transition words which helped my writing flow more smoothly.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

From the Mesopotamian civilization to the present day civilization, writing has taken a place of importance in our daily lives; something I have always struggled with. Through school the most difficult subject that I have always struggled with is English. Growing up my first language was Spanish due to the fact that my parents do know much English. My parents were never able to read to me in English preventing me from hearing and seeing the English language; it was not until I entered elementary school that I was exposed to English. This has contributed to my difficulties in English courses throughout my education.…

After accumulating a multitude of source I find myself only taking very limited information from them. Although all the sources I find are solid, I also often times find myself using the same information from each source. With this my papers sometimes become repetitive and make it harder to read. For this portfolio, I have chosen three papers that I believe depict both my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, how I’ve grown as a writer, and how I still have an immense gap for development in my writing as it is early in my writing career in college.…
