Believing in oneself can reduce anxious thoughts and feelings, and therefore cause you to do better on a task. Feeling afraid or unsure about your ability to complete a task can have a detrimental effect on how well you can do something. Having a higher self-esteem can enable a person to deal with failure better than a person with low self-esteem as well. If someone with low self-esteem experiences failure, they tend to view their failure on a more global scale, often feeling that they will fail at everything they do. Rather, people with higher self-esteem are able to compartmentalize their failure and move on, rather than viewing that failure on such a large scale. The difference being that self-esteem is defined as one’s overall view of their self-worth and value to a society. Self-efficacy, however, is defined as your confidence in yourself and your abilities to complete a task successfully “Academic self-efficacy is a significant predictor of academic resilience, and its development can involve restructuring learning to maximize opportunities for success” (Page 277). Based off that definition, and the description provided by the essay, it is safe to say that Martin and Marsh found that students who have an elevated confidence level in their abilities are able to achieve their goals and complete tasks more propitiously compared to their less confident counterparts. So, according to this article, it is incredibly important for students to believe in themselves to reach their full
