Implementing honor codes early on can be difficult due to the large number of students who live off campus or are only part time students (Roig and Marks 109). Signing and understanding the pledge presented to students at the beginning of the year helps them realize that the Academic Honor Code is not optional; it’s mandatory (Fleischmann 117). Giving them that early understanding will aim towards making it easier for students to accept it. If students were introduced academic honor codes earlier on then their attitude towards cheating could be changed (Fleischmann 116; McCabe 27). It’s like when parents teach their kids the rules early on and they, in turn, are better behaved. Students are introduced the honor concept and as soon as they experience academic pressures in their classes, then they are given a case study and shown how the honor codes are used properly to ensure there is not cheating necessary to pass (Fleischmann 117). Students who take their honor codes into consideration and decide not to cheat shouldn’t worry about failing a paper. Using the steps they take when examining their cases will help them know what exactly to do when the time comes. Students can learn simple rules in kindergarten and their shapes therefore they can learn some integrity with Academic Honor Codes. Teaching students anything early on can help them understand it better later or even understand it now. Students don’t care about learning, they just want to pass their classes so they can either go to college or finish high school. Teaching students the Academic Honor Codes early on will help them understand that cheating is not permissible. They will learn to care about what they do and how they do it. Integrity is something everyone will need in the real world, so teaching these Academic Honor Codes early on in school will teach them some integrity helping them in the real
