Due to women eating more than recommended or initially being obese before pregnancy, it puts them at risk for certain health issues and can harm the baby. Diabetes that is first diagnosed while the mother is pregnant is called Gestational Diabetes and “this condition can increase the risk of having a cesarean delivery”. (ACOG, 2016) Mother who were diagnosed gestational diabetes, are at risk of having diabetes in later on in life. It also puts their children at risk. A mother who is obese, is also at risk for Preeclampsia. This a high blood pressure disorder that interferes with the mother’s entire body. There is a chance for kidney or liver failure and also a stroke. This condition “can lead to seizures, called eclampsia...severe cases need emergency treatment to avoid these complications. The baby may need to be delivered early”. (ACOG, 2016) For the baby, there is an increased risk of heart and neural tube defects. An article from the Journal of Perinatal Education, consisted of a study that related the association between health care providers and the behavior of pregnant women. It discussed the fact that most pregnant women believed in the “eating for two” theory. Also, how these women believed that increasing food intake is more important than eating right. Not every health care provider believed they made an impact on these pregnant women’s health. To be exact, “65% of health care providers do not believe weight control counseling significantly affect the incidence of obesity”. (May, 2014) The results of the study indicated that women who discussed diet with their health care providers made healthier food choices and changes to their diet compared to women who did not. The reason for this is because not only did they discuss diet, they also discussed other health behavior problems. It was made known that the main reason health care providers did not want to discuss diet with these mothers, was due to not having all the correct knowledge to give to them. Based on the study, “36.7% of health care providers reported being interested in additional training to assist pregnant women in maintaining good dietary behaviors”.
