The purpose of this paper is to show how the current work force is shifting towards a virtual workplace and why your company should make this shift. We will also discuss some misconceptions about working from home, what is required to successfully implement a virtual workforce, and advantages your company can gain by having a virtual workforce. More and more companies face the challenge of how to quickly grow without exponentially increasing their expenses. To solve this problem, your company has to establish a virtual workforce. The virtual or mobile office is the workplace of the future. Employees are enabled to work from anywhere, anytime, and without being limited by geographic boundaries. Most communication from a virtual workforce will be done through text. An essential skill is to make sure you have clear, coherent written communication because confusion is only a keystroke away. But don’t let these scare you away from embracing the change that is coming. There are also many advantages for a virtual workforce.
One of the big advantages to establishing a virtual workforce is lower overhead cost.8 While you can still maintain a main office for all your employees to call a home base, you will not have to lease as much office space. Your company would also save on not having to buy furniture or pay for utilities. You would also save on lower employee costs. Someone who lives in New York or Washington D.C. is going to demand more than someone in Kansas City. They are just as talented but have a lower cost of living so would be willing accept less. These costs can quickly add up.
Another reason for a virtual workforce is that you will have an increased amount of satisfied employees. Most employees would prefer to work from home. They are going to be more loyal and stay longer when given this benefit. Also when recruiting new employees, more and more people are looking for opportunities where they can work from home. There are the financial and non-financial benefits that include increased productivity, savings in overhead, real estate, and related cost, improved continuity of operations, savings in absenteeism and turnover, and being able to recruit and retain the best people. Surveys show that more than 80% of employees want the opportunity to work from home.9 Information technology has transformed where work happens and how it’s being completed. Instead of forcing employees to concentrate and get work done, the virtual workforce and its flexibility are allowing for a different way to accomplish task through creativity, knowledge sharing, teamwork and coordination.
