Service learning is the cross roads of volunteer work in the community and the classroom; it is serving with a purpose and being reflective about the process and impacts on the community. This service learning opportunity is especially beneficial for future teachers like myself since it helps to build community relations, it shows students active and caring adulating in the education field and helps developing teachers apply skills to the real world. In fact, Eyler & Giles (1999) in their research have found evidence that one of the major benefits of service learning is the applied problem solving, critical thinking, and real world experience for the students while they are still being mentored in school. I believe that future educators, myself included, can profit from more service learning opportunities that place us in classrooms to become more acquainted with the issues students have today and to develop our own identity in the classroom. I learned more about patience and the skills of teaching verse knowing a subject during my time at St. Peter High School and I am sure other potential teachers would find their own areas for improvement since we are all life-long
