Personal Narrative: My Remedial Math Class

Improved Essays
My one remedial math class is the reason technology is not good in class rooms. I am the type of person that needs to see things for me to understand and comprehend it. This class is all online, with a bunch of different levels in it. The way they teach you isn’t a good way to learn anything. You sit there in a big class room with all different groups. You watch the videos they give you that are online and its up to you to figure out how to do the math. You can’t just watch a video and expect to learn everything in those eleven minutes. “The class meets twice a week, late in the afternoon, and the clientele, about fifty undergraduates, tends to drag in and slump, looking disconsolate and a little lost, waiting for a jump start.” (Edmundson) So, I’m saying that some technology is good but not for an entire class. Working online is not the best way to learn. You’re not interacting with others, or there is no way to ask any questions. If you are like me and ask a lot of questions, classes online make things ten times harder than it needs to be. I need to be engaged with everyone so I know what’s going on. I need someone to show me in person what I’m supposed to do. I feel like learning face to face you comprehended things and understand completely. Learning online might work for some people that don’t like to engage with others, but …show more content…
You need to be able to understand and comprehend what is going on, or you’ll never pass. Its not set up for a good learning experience. You are pretty much teaching yourself how to do everything and that’s not what we pay teachers to do. I for one can’t learn by setting at a table staring at the computer while some lady talks to me. Learning to me is something very important. Learning is engaging yourself with others, understanding their opinions, gaining experiences. You can’t do that all online. So, I’m saying that some technology is good but not for an entire

Math had always came easily to me. I was known as the math know-it-all because I would be finished with homework assignments before class was even over. Thus, in ninth grade, my Algebra I teacher told me that I should go into a honor level math class. My first honors level class was a breeze to me. We could hand in homework late, revise tests and quizzes, and had perfect notes given to us in class.…

I first saw "e" on my TI-36 calculator 2 years ago. I did not know what it was. Originally, my thought process told me that "e" was just an alternative symbol for pi that is only used in advanced and college math courses. But my brain decided that "e" was one of those an alphabetical variables I was seeing in my problems. (I was taking Algebra 1 at the time.).…

As a little girl, I always used to struggle with mathematics no matter how hard I tried. My grades were always fine, but I would get so frustrated that I always needed to ask someone for help. I remember being selected to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade, and although I was excited, at the same time I was extremely nervous. In my mind, I felt that I was not good enough, yet I still tried my best. There were times I gave up, but when I passed that class with a B, I was thrilled.…

From the very beginning, I enjoyed math immensely. I admired the format in which it was presented especially the very first phases of learning algebra in middle school. As I learned how to answer the equations, I was finding myself more intrigued with each step of the procedure and then having the teacher check my work in anticipation of knowing whether or not I had gotten the answer correct. I found myself focused intensely while following the teacher’s steps and then thoroughly reviewing the lessons from earlier in the day. At that present time math was becoming my favorite subject.…

Math wasn't always difficult, in the past I honestly think I was better at math or maybe math was just easier back then. In elementary school I remember that in award ceremony's I would be rewarded 3 math medals and only received 1 language arts medal. Now as for middle school, math did start to get a bit more challenging. If there was ever a problem that I struggled on I would just ask my friends or the teacher for help. In the past when there was a difficult problem I would just work on my own to figure out the solution, and if I couldn't find it I'd just ask for help.…

My own personal math autobiography… should I start with the good, the bad, or the just plain scary? Perhaps starting with my overall confidence level will be a good starting point so I don’t overwhelm you right in the beginning. While the positives of technology seem to be never ending, the downsides tend to add up just as much, maybe even more, making the integration to a “Smart Classroom” more difficult for students and staff. Technology often poses as a distraction, a way to cheat, and even tries to replace teachers-- all very dangerous when regarding a child’s education. The most important of these negatives is distraction. When working with computers or tablets it is so easy to venture off into non educational sites. Students could easily access their Facebook or Twitter accounts, watch silly cat videos on YouTube, or try and beat their high score on Flappy Bird or other mobile videogames.…

Online courses lack in the area of physical communication. Communication is virtually done through emails or discussion board assignments; often times this can be a disadvantage to students who need a quick response from their instructor.
