Personal Narrative: My First Online Class

As a student I have always tried to avoid public speaking courses as much as possible. Especially the ones that are for public speaking, once I found out I was going to have to take a public speaking course I was dreading the moment than I found out I could take it solely online and I thought oh this wont be as bad, even though I was still pretty anxious about it. Once in Com103 I was dreading having to say the first speech. Then we had our first online class, I felt a lot more prepared and had a better understanding of what was expected. Through com103 I was able to grow an understanding of how to prepare and organize a speech, I was able to decrease the anxiety I get before a speech, effectively listen and am now more prepared to talk and …show more content…
I really did not know how to set up a speech properly. It was great to learn how to use an outline to set up a speech and use it as a guide to state my points. Previously when I spoke I would try and memorize every single thing I wanted to say which ended up setting me up for failure. The first speech in this class I ended up trying to memorize exactly what I wanted to say after I had written it all out. I then ended up reading directly off my paper, which wasn’t what I wanted to accomplish. With my next speech I learned from the collab session and text that it was a lot more beneficial to create an outline. From creating an outline I felt more prepared to do the speech. Once, I did my second speech I really wasn’t as scatter brained as the previous one and was able to go through each point with ease thanks to the outline. The outline also made it easier to set up my points in the order necessary for the speech. Which is another thing I learned from this class. There are many different ways to set up a speech according to the topic at hand like chronological, sequential, etc. learning this made it easier to pick one and create an outline off the order I would …show more content…
At my current job I feel I will be able to prepare more for things like back to school and open house where I have to talk to parents in my class. I also feel like once I become a nurse it will help me communicate better with patients having public speaking is great for all forms of communication. It not only taught me how to relax during a speech but it taught me how to effectively listen as well. I now feel that I am a lot more prepared to communicate with people. Through com103 I was able to grow an understanding of how to prepare and organize a speech, I was able to decrease the anxiety I get before a speech, effectively listen, and am now more prepared to talk and communicate with people in the future. I am very glad that I took this class and am less fearful of taking future communication

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

One of the first videos that I watched on your channel was your playthrough of The Beginner’s Guide last summer. I started watching it a couple of hours after midnight and I did not once pause it. I remember feeling closer to you than to any other person in the world that night. I experienced stronger emotions than I had in weeks or maybe even months throughout the entirety of your play through.…

Over the course of the semester, I have learned all of the skills necessary to excel in school and college. Some of the most important things I have learned were how to manage time and how to be an active reader. Before learning how to manage my time, I would easily get distracted and procrastinate but now I have learned how to get everything done in a timely manner. Also, before the course I would struggle to comprehend what my textbook said but thanks to the course, I now spend the time to reevaluate what I am reading to fully understand the material. Other helpful lessons I have learned from this class were how to take good, helpful notes and what kind of learner I am.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

This week, I dove right in and started picking up a couple of things in Mrs. Herrold's classroom. To begin, I took over the morning routine of the "Daily Fix-It" worksheets, calendar, and morning meeting. Through morning meeting, I was able to get to know the students a little bit better. I asked them questions like: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What is your favorite animal?"…

Many times when one thinks of being an RA the financial benefits of the job opportunity becomes the focus. While I am happy about those awesome benefits those are not my only primary focuses. I am hoping to become an RA because I enjoy working with other people, developing professional skills, and building a community. Being a Sociology major, this experience will allow me to really have an on hands training of what I am learning here in my classrooms at U.C. Berkeley. I know that I am capable of handling this position as being an RA, because of my past experiences working with elderly people and also working with high school students.…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…

Upon starting my online ENGL 1301 class for the spring 2017 semester, I set a certain amount of goals that I had planned to carry out. Although this was a repeat class for me, not due to lack of applying myself but for personal reasons. I planned to strive in every way possible not just to complete the course, but to learn how to write effectively. To write at a college level was my primary focus. With a fear of writing college essays, my first agenda was to overcome my fear.…

Overall Speech 101 was a great class for me, i was able to improve my ability to speak in front of a class and gain what it takes to be a great speaker. One thing that really helped me was looking back at my speech videos. At first i was really shy and thought that looking at myself speak would be embracing but it really helped me out. After every speech i would look back at my film and see the areas i can improve on. Yes indeed looking at my speech’s really helped me out especially on my final persuasive speech, at first i lacked confidence but as the speeches went on and i looked back i noticed the big difference in confidence.…
