As an Army Veteran, my military occupational skill is Administrative. In retaining the demonstrated twenty years of knowledge, skills, ability, I would like to apply it towards criminal justice. In addition to secretarial skills, I have chosen to further my education to attain the basic legal knowledge. I would need to be familiar with legal terminology, court-filing rules, legal documents, and law office procedures in order to prepare documents, do research, and perform other tasks assigned to me. The position I envision is a Paralegal. Out of the three branches (Police, Courts, and Corrections), within the criminal justice system, I have chosen the Courts branch. The court system is formally required to seek the truth, to obtain justice …show more content…
Ergonomics plays a major role in the life of a paralegal. Research by Ergotron (1982) illustrates a sit-or-stand mobile computer workstation that allows you to move from a seated position to standing is needed. The year was 2000, Peachtree City, Ga. Three large Caucasian girls in high school bully a petite African American teenager named D. D told the school officials and nothing was done. The bullies told D that they were going to beat her up tomorrow for ratting on them. In fear, D brings a knife to school to defend her. A fight breaks out and the knife falls to the ground. D is charged because she had a knife and something could have happened and not because she had it and did not use it. D was forced into pleading guilty to get probation. If she pleaded not guilty, there was a chance in being tried and convicted by jurors and sentenced to five years in jail. D spent two weeks in Fayette County Jail. D could have won her case if her parents had money to hire a good lawyer. D did not deserve the magnitude of punishment at such a young age. While interviewing D, I asked her what impact this stigma had on her. D stated, “She is at a disadvantage because she must work harder to prove to be more than she is on paper.” (D. Callands, daughter-in-law, personal communication, 2016) I have found the criminal justice system to be stimulating, thought provoking and lastly bias.

INTRODUCTION Paralegal certification is available in four states while only two states offer document preparer certifications through their State Bar Associations. These states require a certification examination to educationally qualified paralegals or legal assistants prior to the Bar Associations authorizing the paralegal to use the title of “Certified Paralegal,” however, certification is not required in these states to work as a paralegal. The American Bar Association defines a paralegal as someone with the education and work experience required to work for an attorney or law firm performing specific duties for which the attorney is responsible. This is a great environment for the paralegal that works best in a team atmosphere and excels in a specific aspect of the position. There may be days, weeks, or even months of research for one case, or the sometimes mundane task drafting documents to file with the court.…
