Telling a lie shows a large amount of distrust in a person. Trust between 2 or more people is one of the most important traits in a relationship, because knowing the person you interact with helps you to determine that persons character, which as Martin Luther King Jr. once said, is what we should all judge our peers by. At a certain point in this cycle of lies, people often begin to create a new identity for themselves in order to feel acknowledged as something different than who they are. While this may seem OK at the time, it only creates problems in any sort of relationship. A real friend or partner is someone who accepts you for who you really are, not just what you wish you were. Nation of Lies Why do we lie to others, but expect others to be honest with us? Today in society, lies have embodied the lives of many to the point where it has become a natural part of our lifestyle. Lying has become a natural habit for us, it has become a factor in how we carry out our lives. Whether we may have lied in consideration of how others may feel, or if it was because we did not want to carry out something we were assigned, lying has become so natural to us that we cannot distinguish it from what the truth really is. Lying has become a cultural cancer, as Stephanie Ericsson states in her essay, “The Ways We Lie”, that we have come to the point where we accepted it into our society.…

Employers, friends, coworkers, and family will stop trusting them. If you are known as a liar no one will take the words you say seriously. No matter how hard you try to earn the respect and trust back from someone after you lie to them, they will always second guess the things you say to them and not fully trust you. If you lie in a relationship, your significant other will not trust you anymore, if you lie at work your supervisors will always second guess your words and actions, and if you lie with your family the support everyone needs from family will be gone because they can’t trust you. Lying hurts everyone but it mostly hurts the individual who lied.…

In the essay The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, she mentions on how she discovered that telling the truth all the time is nearly impossible because it would be living with some serious consequences. Throughout the history of the United States and other parts of the world, a high percentage of people tend to not be able to tell the truth when they are asked simple questions by members of their family or by their close friends. As telling the truth may have consequences, telling lies may have deeper consequences that cannot only hurt the person telling the lie, but it can affect the person being lied to. In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

Most lies told are for the purpose of protecting one’s reputation. As seen in The Crucible, many main characters lie in order to protect their reputation. According to David J. Ley, Ph.D., most people who constantly tell lies “are often worried about losing the respect of those around them. They want you to like them, be impressed, and value them. And they’re worried that the truth might lead you to reject or shame them”…

you find telling the truth way more easier than it is to tell the lie or “sweet talk” your way out of it. Lies no matter how big or small are going to add up and get much more confusing in the end. When speaking out on the truth its half of most people’s instinct or in my cases it’s not, but after a while and you focus on not telling lies it becomes nearly too almost impossible to lie .Someone or something gives it away and they are left already knowing. Like for example if there was a surprise dinner for someone at work and the person you are throwing a surprise to ask what are you doing for the weekend you say I have this surprise dinner I have to go to and you were just being honest and everyone was trying to be secretive about. If you are an honest person most people will come to you about information or feedback.…
