The Importance Of Independent Learning

In higher education, learning and studying are different in several ways from that of further education; the main determinant that separates the two tiers of education from each other is that there is more emphasis on independent learning at university compared to college. Independent learning can be defined as being able to learn and motivate yourself on your own. When it comes to learning on your own, this is an important part of independent learning, as you have to be self-disciplined in order to allocate time for studying which could be in the library finding specific resources or completing old exam paper questions. This experience is worth mentioning because this was a different learning environment as each individual in the class is studying at their own pace due to the different levels of understanding of the language. I honest think that this particularly forced me to work at a good pace as I normally had exams in my last 4 years attending hence I couldn’t afford to procrastinate in class. What I had learnt is that not every learning environment is the same and an individual must be able to integrate himself into a new learning environment. Despite this, only having a two-hour session a week, isn’t going to improve your Portuguese dramatically as you must have the dedication to go home and consolidate the work. At university, it is important to understand the lecturer’s feedback thus this skill, not only comes from Portuguese but all other subjects will hopefully prepare me more on this aspect. I will use this learning experience to help me when it comes to university, as I learnt how to integrate myself in other learning environments in the past. Portuguese school also helped when it came to studying and learning, without the teacher always hassling you for work. When I had exams, I always handed in work for my Portuguese teacher to mark and give feedback, this was without the teacher asking me to do anything as I thought feedback on my work is really important. I believe that this experience is important for me to take to university, as it had an element of independent study, hence, it will push me to do my own research as the lecturers won’t spoon-feed the students everything. The personal attributes that I have gained from this were adaptability and self-reliance in a way as, despite I think that sometimes a lot of dependency on the teacher can be one of my weaknesses, this helped me focus and improve on this weakness through secondary school and early stages of
