Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs provides a pyramid of the needs of all of us; the bottom being physiological and the highest being self-actualization. This is connected to the motivated sequence because all needs provide motives. A motive is defined as the impulse to believe in something or act on a command that justifies our actions. Most needs intersect, which also provide many motives. Using the motivated sequence in a persuasive speech will create an easy to follow guideline for the audience to fulfill the need you are addressing. For example, since there is a need to save the world from pollution, a motive might be recycling. Using the motivated sequence, one would grab the attention of the audience by stating a shocking fact about pollution, showing that it is a problem and then introduce how recycling could be a solution. This would fulfill the basic all needs provide motives. In order to lessen pollution, we need to recycle, would be this need and motive balance, clearly seen through the motivated sequence. a. In order for a speech to be received well and flow, a specific purpose is needed to guide the speech along. If a speaker does not have a specific purpose, the will go in circles, accomplish very little and leave the audience wondering what happened. A specific purpose should be able to be said in a sentence in front of the class that will show exactly what you aim to accomplish within your speech. This is not a broad piece of fact, but a singularized statement said that will not only tell the audience your topic, but what you wish to do with it.
b. A specific purpose does not simply state fact, such as informing people on drugs, but gives a detailed description for the audience to follow, such as informing the audience on how the use of narcotics is damaging to the body and the brain. The specific purpose needs to be direct, lay out a groundwork for the audience and not leave facts out that would make the topic too broad. In order to create a good specific purpose, one must first need to decide if they are persuading or informing, what topic they are choosing and exactly what they wish the audience to get out of the
