Gap Year Speech

Douglas Lurton once said “When you determine what you want, you have made the most important decision of your life. You have to know what you want in order to attain it.” Well Doug, you couldn’t be more right. When we’re young we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up. Some say a teacher, others say a doctor, and in my case I said a princess. As I grew up I realized I obviously couldn’t be a princess and I was crushed! So I had to direct my attention in another direction. Trying to figure out what you want to do with your life is rough, especially when you’re 17 or 18 graduating from high school. You have no experience and no motivation to be directed to the path you should be taking. Well I’m here to tell you if there’s a will there’s a way and there’s definitely a way. Some students will use their time away to intern at job they wish to have, others will stay in their home towns and work full time, but most students want to take their time to travel and gain world experiences. There’s no telling the amount of perspective you will gain in a year, this would be the perfect time go places and do all the activities you’ve always wanted to do and not have to worry about school and homework (Lord). Regardless how you spend your gap year, it’s a choice that should be well thought out (“Should You Take A Gap Year?”). Kenneth Hubbell, a sophomore at Princeton University who took a gap year to assist a water filter project in Central America says, “Having a structured life is important to me. The gap year helped me realize that chemical engineering is what I want to do” (“Should You Take A Gap Year?”). Kenneth is a perfect example of gap year success story. Assuming he was indecisive about becoming a chemical engineer he went out on a ledge and helped thirsty children in Central America.
