The Importance of a Diverse Workforce
One of the most influential writers of the renaissance, Michel de Montaigne, saw the crucial significance to conquer ignorance and to utilize the knowledge within every individual. He simply stated that, “There never were, in the world, two opinions alike, no more than two hairs, or two grains; the most universal quality is diversity (Michel).” Diversity of genders, races, abilities, religions, and age provide better performance from the integration brought through various backgrounds. The success of a corporation depends on a strong, diverse management team with the ability to collaborate to lead the business forward. The company will continue to grow and prosper from the work done from a uniquely built team of employees, ensuring wide acceptance from customers and the ability to attain equal opportunity in the workers’ careers. “Research findings regarding the effects of team diversity have been mixed, as some literature suggests diversity is beneficial while other findings suggest diversity may be detrimental. The discrepancy in team diversity research findings seems to be rooted in the fact that while diversity can at times be

Thomas & Ely (1996) espoused that a diverse workforce did not result in the improvement in the performance of the organization. Milliken and Martins (1996), concluded after reviewing the literature that racial and gender diversity can have adverse effect on individual and group outcomes in certain instances. In order to examine diversity in today’s workplace, we must first look at the history of diversity and its place within the workplace. Over the past couple of decades, diversity in the workplace has been an increasing norm, which is visible in many companies. However, today’s definition of diversity has a completely different meaning than what diversity might have meant twenty or so years ago. Throughout the early days of business, when companies began creating initiatives for diversity, the focus was on African Americans and other minorities.…

The term “glass ceiling” has been a topic of debate ever since it’s inception, in fact, even its origin is controversial. That said, Gay Bryant is generally seen as the person who popularized the phrase after using it in her 1985 book, The Working Woman Report: Succeeding in Business in the 80’s. The expression is used to describe the unseen barrier that limits advancement for women and minority races in the workplace despite the laws in place designed to prevent discrimination. An article which takes an interesting route in defending the idea of a “glass ceiling” is one written by Lisa Quast, aptly named “Debunking Myths of Gender Equality” as it is formatted in a way where each paragraph is undermining a so-called myth. On the contrary,…

Women’s activist Marilyn Loden derived the phrase “glass ceiling” in 1978. A metaphor for the barrier that keeps women from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy, this phrase served as an inspiration for women apart of the second and third wave feminism movements. In particular, women experience a glass ceiling within the workplace, as women are unable to achieve higher-up positions within their specific field of work. Even further, those who do manage to secure a rank equal to their male counterpart receive a smaller paycheck. Sociologists Wendy Wolf and Neil Fligstein have analyzed the relationship between sex and authority within the workplace and conclude that “recent research has shown that women are much less likely than men to be in positions of authority, even when they have the same level of education and…

Having a diverse workforce, she is deliberating promoting one of her employee to demonstrate her resolve to embrace diversity. This effort can suggest that Shania is trying to break the “glass cliff” where minorities are promoted to leadership positions within an organization (Cook & Glass, 2014, p. 441). While directed to the leadership of large organizations, Cook and Glass (2014) noted that “women and men are likely to be differentially selected for leadership position based on the health of the firm” (p. 441). However, promoting a climate that supports diversity can lead to greater worker commitment and decreased turnover (Cool & Glass, 2014, p. 450).…
