Type 2 diabetes, formally known as adult onset, is the most predominant type of diabetes. According to Lewis et al., (2014) it accounts for nearly 95% of all diabetes. With this type of diabetes, the pancreas continues to produce insulin, but it is either poorly utilized by the body or its inadequate. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) suggests that the first line of treatment and management of the disease should focus on healthy diet and exercise (Type 2, 2016). Evidence-based research has shown that losing 10-20 pounds of weight could reduce blood glucose levels and may decrease the chances of complications such as heart and blood vessel diseases. Obesity is a major risk factor of T2DM. With most of the qualitative methods used some form of questionnaire or focused group interviews. Majority of the interviews were face-to-face with semi-structured questions that was reflected on the aims of that particular study. The interviews were tape-recorded which made it easier for the researchers to analyze the data collected anytime. The studies that employed quantitative utilized a double-blinded peer-reviewed, randomized control study, and a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design.
