They fill in whatever extra time they have with intense core workouts or cross training with weights or swimming. From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

One year ago today, the first ever Greeley Cross Country Championships was hosted, a 5k race at Josephine Jones Park between the five high schools in Greeley, Colorado- Frontier Academy, Greeley West, University Schools, Northridge, and Greeley Central. Last year Frontier placed first at the meet in the boys race. However, since then their top runners graduated and the Central boys became a real threat to many teams. Although today was mainly a way for Central to come out on top, I wanted redemption from the poor performance I gave at that race. Last year.…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

A human lives their life according to their beliefs and focuses. Many of these focuses and beliefs are reflected in the ritual(s) a human performs. Rituals are very reverent and/or traditional aspects of a participant's being, and may help to guide one to their definition of living. Cross country and marching band provide example to this theory of how strongly rituals are strongly involved with how one lives. Cross country is a sport that is designed for anyone besides the weak- to become a true cross country runner, one must love to purposely endure pain for longer than they think they ever believed they could.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

The first thing I want to point out when running cross country is the distance, for both boys and girls it is a 5k race (3.1 miles). According to Maddie Verbeke “You arrive, the gun goes off, and everyone runs the same race. That’s it. Other than differences between high school and college, there’s no variety in XC.” (Maddie Verbeke)…

Growing up, I often was described as having “Sullivan speed”, which contrary to popular belief, was not a good thing. I’ve never been particularly fast, in fact I’ve always been relatively slow. But one thing I always had that made up for it was endurance. So, when my freshman year of high school began, I decided that I would try out for the cross-country team. While I still was never the fastest on the team, I truly enjoyed running competitively as well as in practice with my friends.…

I finished second to last in thirty minutes. In one short cross country season, my coach inspired me to keep at it, and work hard. I ended the season 35 pounds lighter, 14 minutes faster, and for the first time so proud of my accomplishments that the sting of the auditorium experience almost faded. Mr. Pinkerton said by mid-October he saw my face for the first time because I always looked down. I was motivated to succeed because the words of a bully stung so deeply in my sole.…

The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…
