Essay About Working In The Community

During this unit, we learned about working with communities during a disaster. Part of working with these communities is communicating. I learned that there are two groups of people that must be communicated with while getting prepared for a disaster: the stakeholders/ community resources and the group of people being taught. While imagining teaching people in the community, I never quite grasped how large scale it could be. Stakeholders were always people involved with businesses, not nursing. However, through this unit, I could see the importance of having stakeholders. In the community, everything the public health nurse does revolves around partnerships. So, in order to effectively help people, a community nurse needs to use those partnerships in a way that will be beneficial for everyone involved. These partnerships can determine whether the program fails or succeeds. When the stakeholders feel part of the …show more content…
I think the most important thing is actually experiencing working in the community. While working in a community I can see more of people 's everyday needs. They usually only come to the hospital when they are really sick and we don’t get to see their smaller challenges. I think this would help me to focus on finding resources and really understanding my patients. I think that personally I need to work on my education skills. While in clinical, we had to educate our clients on their medications. I found it hard to prepare and know everything about the medication. It also felt awkward to be in a teaching position, while I knew so little. In order to perform an intervention and help people with challenging health problems, I need first be comfortable in my knowledge. I suppose this will come with time, but for I understand that it is a skill that is pinnacle to the nursing

One area that I believe I was successful in was in regards to competency 3.3, 3.8 and 3.12. While caring for a client who had been experiencing chest pain prior to me coming on shift, I ensured that I spoke with my nurse about the changes to expect and how to respond if the changes should arise during my care. I also made sure to take frequent vital signs and use subjective questioning to determine any changes in the status of my client. This allowed me to skillfully implement appropriate nursing care and prepare myself for a situation that could potentially change rather quickly. One area that I have been working on and would like to improve upon is developing mini DM assignments with each client that I take into my care.…

Being a nurse does not mean that you simply take vital signs or give medication to a patient, being a nurse is being a caregiver, an educator, a patient’s advocate and much more. There are many components that a nurse should meet or should be able to accomplish. The Mississippi Nursing Competency Model is a model that allows nurses enhance their education and practice, also facilitates articulation across nursing education programs and allows employers to know what are the different skills performed by the different educational degrees. The competencies include: patient-centered care, professionalism, leadership, systems-based practice, informatics and technology, communication, teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Because this was my first clinical experience, there were certain competencies that I was not able to either accomplish or I accomplished very little, like leadership or…

On April 15th I had the great pleasure of experiencing a service at a Mosque with Sarah. Upon first arrival the building seemed much like any other place of worship I have seen. The difference is that I actually went in and before I did go in, I had to do something I have never done before. I have always thought that the head coverings that most woman wear were really cool. Wearing one was actually fun, even if a little difficult since I seemed to have forgotten a hairband.…

Conclusion Clear and Karp determined that as communities begin to implement guidelines that seek to reduce crime and enhance the community, rather than focusing solely on immediate issues, there may be an opportunity to increase community confidence. Ultimately, Clear and Karp conclude that there is no “final resolution” (Clear & Karp, 1999, p. 2). What the authors attempt to accomplish with this text is to encourage the reader to consider the community justice ideal, and how it might be implemented in order to enhance neighborhoods. There is no concrete method by which institute a community justice program (Clear & Karp, 1999).…

A Character of Resilience Education is a privilege that not everyone in the world gets to experience. One purpose of education is to teach you the knowledge and skills upon which you can build a career. Arguably, a more important purpose of education is to develop one’s character and shape them into outstanding members of the community. As a nursing major, I have the unique opportunity to learn both in the classroom and outside the classroom in a clinical setting. The clinical setting offers a wide variety of learning experiences, allowing you to expand your knowledge and hone your skills while still under the watchful eye of instructors.…

Indeed, a community nurse has a greater proactive and preventative role in population health. I have certainly had the opportunity to solidify this knowledge over the past 11 weeks. Unfortunately, it seems that much of our health care system is focused on reactive interventions rather than preventative ones. Undeniably, a reactive approach is certainly more costly than a preventative one in terms of health care and the sooner governments put more emphasis on preventative health measures the better off we will be as a population. With this understanding, as a BScN student in reactive nursing settings, I will be sure to place a greater emphasis on client health teaching, empowerment, and health…

For twenty years of my life, I have never done any volunteer activities for the soceity. Although I have donated money to some of the organisations, I have never joined any activities physically. As in the class Social Ethic: Phil 123C we discussed at the beginning of the semester about “you” and “me”, I always think in term of “me” instead of thinking for the soceity.
