Nurse Mentor Reflection

I have wanted to be a nurse my entire life. I come from a long line of women in the health care careers. There is something about helping someone that makes your soul happy. I job shadowed two very influential women at ABCM Rehabilitation Centers of Independence- West Campus. First, a charge nurse Registered Nurse Kathy Main; who has been a veteran to the facility for many years. Secondly, I job shadowed the Director of Nursing Kristin Dellegardelle also, a Registered Nurse currently working towards her bachelor’s degree. I gained a lot of experience from both women. I learned about charting, labs, assessments, treatments, admissions, nutrition, care planning, Medicare, safety, and therapies. These ladies both have busy days, and a lot of interruptions …show more content…
It is very prominent at the nursing home. The director of nursing has many things to do to get all the other nurse’s ready for their day ahead. Kristin, posts all the information on a communication board via the computer. The system we us is called Point Click Care. This is what is used for all types of charting on any resident in the facility. Kathy the charge nurse I followed looked at this communication board first. We found that there were a few changes including: resident 1 lab draw for CBC, and CMP (Complete Blood Test and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel). These labs tell you information regarding the residents the function of the kidneys, liver, electrolytes, and so much more. Kristin the D.O.N gets orders from the doctor, and Kathy a charge nurse draws the blood and sends the labs over for analysis. The lab values then get faxed back to the facility and the Director of Nursing looks over changes, and posted new communications on the communication board. Both nurses are extremely busy most of the day. There are always more tasks to be done. You never know what will end up …show more content…
Often in the nursing home you get a new admission. It is the director of nursing’s job to look over the admission and decide if we as a facility can meet the resident’s level of care. If we are able to then it is told to the charge nurse when the resident will be coming. The charge nurse (Kathy) also looks over the pre-admission information. She then starts the admission process. The admission process is very long but to sum it up it includes the following: diagnosis, treatments, inputting orders, creating care plan, getting equipment ready, presenting information to therapy departments, as well as dietary. Along with that comes informing the CNA’s and getting the room ready. When the resident gets to the facility there are many things that need to be done. First, the residents fill out all the paper work. Secondly, we do a full assessment from head to toes of skin, as well as a full set of vitals, a weight, and preferences. There is so much work to be done in 8 short hours. In conclusion, I enjoyed following both the Director of nursing, and the charge nurse around. I found that their jobs frequently rely on each other to make residents lifes better. I would say this if I could choose I would like to be a charge nurse because I enjoy working directly with residents and staff. I see more now what the job of a Director of nursing is and know that it is not something I will be ready to do for sometimes.

The AACN suggests nurses nurse staffing must ensure an effective match between nurse skills and patient needs (AACN, 2016). Not only does inappropriate staffing lead to medical errors, it can also bring about stressed and overworked nurses. The unit I work on is often short-staffed leading nurses to take on more than they are used to and leaving charge nurses scrambling to assign duties and calling in reinforcements. To the best of my ability, I will try to match my nurse’s abilities to the patient’s acuities and request critique if the assignments do not work effectively with current staffing. In order to address the staffing needs and the workflow that changes hour to hour, I believe the implementation of a resource nurse role will help address the staffing needs when patient loads become hectic.…
