Singing along with my dad, by the age of ten, I knew the lyrics by heart. My favorite verse was “Everyday my papa would work, To try to make ends meet, To see that we would eat, Keep those shoes upon my feet”. This stanza highlights the efforts his father had contributed to the family such as maintaining a source of income to provide for the family. This lyric has held a special place in my heart as my parents would take alternating day and night shifts so that one way or another, my parents could take care of us instead of hiring a babysitter. As my parents were both young immigrants, they both arrived to America without the support of their parents. With this unfortunate experience, they pledged to be there for my sisters and I day and night. From Paul Anka 's memoir song to acknowledging the amount of effort put into raising me, I’ve learned to return the favor by making my parent’s proud. By tending to my parent’s requests such as taking care of my sisters after school, I start to recognize the act of caring for another. I quickly became concerned with what they ate at lunch to whether her friends were treating her nicely, I became a “parent”. A voluntary act that I have made last year as I turned sixteen was getting my license. A role model can be defined as "a person looked up to by others as an example to be imitated." Being the oldest sibling, I’ve always wanted to lead my younger siblings down a positive path. In many instances, see myself alongside with my parents rooting, supporting and guiding my sisters to a successful and hopeful future. From my past experiences, both positive or negative, I always encourage my sister to ask for tips or advice as they grow. I’ve learned that everyone makes mistakes and as I speak out on my errors, I can help them avoid these mishaps.I believe that education or skill, for instance, plays a significant role in maximizing the opportunities in society. By being a full time college student and taking college classes ahead of time at John Tyler, I am able to emphasize the importance of being “ahead of the curve”. The idea of being ahead of the curve refers to preparation for the future which I want to instill in their minds. Being prepared allows them to be one step ahead, even when they encounter obstacles. Respect and trust also play a significant role when it comes to being a mentor. I aim to make careful decisions and frequently ask myself what I can do to gain their respect as well as trust to prevent becoming a hypocrite.
