Personal Narrative: Looking Back Into My Life

An author of Saint Paul Trois, C. JoyBell C., believed that “When you lose sight of yourself, you lose your way. To keep your truth in sight you must keep yourself in sight and the world to you should be a mirror to reflect to you your image; the world should be a mirror that you reflect upon.” Looking back into my life, I’ve uncovered many roles that I have carried out to mode me into the person I am today. A role is described as the set of norms, values, behaviors, and personality characteristics attached to a status. From my childhood, I was first introduced to fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of a daughter, sister and soon later, establishing a stable, meaningful self. As I reflect on myself, I begin to review my steps to a caring …show more content…
Singing along with my dad, by the age of ten, I knew the lyrics by heart. My favorite verse was “Everyday my papa would work, To try to make ends meet, To see that we would eat, Keep those shoes upon my feet”. This stanza highlights the efforts his father had contributed to the family such as maintaining a source of income to provide for the family. This lyric has held a special place in my heart as my parents would take alternating day and night shifts so that one way or another, my parents could take care of us instead of hiring a babysitter. As my parents were both young immigrants, they both arrived to America without the support of their parents. With this unfortunate experience, they pledged to be there for my sisters and I day and night. From Paul Anka 's memoir song to acknowledging the amount of effort put into raising me, I’ve learned to return the favor by making my parent’s proud. By tending to my parent’s requests such as taking care of my sisters after school, I start to recognize the act of caring for another. I quickly became concerned with what they ate at lunch to whether her friends were treating her nicely, I became a “parent”. A voluntary act that I have made last year as I turned sixteen was getting my license. Through working, I am able to help my parents pay the bills and other expenses which would lessen the …show more content…
A role model can be defined as "a person looked up to by others as an example to be imitated." Being the oldest sibling, I’ve always wanted to lead my younger siblings down a positive path. In many instances, see myself alongside with my parents rooting, supporting and guiding my sisters to a successful and hopeful future. From my past experiences, both positive or negative, I always encourage my sister to ask for tips or advice as they grow. I’ve learned that everyone makes mistakes and as I speak out on my errors, I can help them avoid these mishaps.I believe that education or skill, for instance, plays a significant role in maximizing the opportunities in society. By being a full time college student and taking college classes ahead of time at John Tyler, I am able to emphasize the importance of being “ahead of the curve”. The idea of being ahead of the curve refers to preparation for the future which I want to instill in their minds. Being prepared allows them to be one step ahead, even when they encounter obstacles. Respect and trust also play a significant role when it comes to being a mentor. I aim to make careful decisions and frequently ask myself what I can do to gain their respect as well as trust to prevent becoming a hypocrite. As my sisters imitate my actions and learn from me, I must be able to display the

My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

The Journey, In Retrospect The whole semester of English 5A was like playing with Legos, but with literature. I would use the things I learned previously in high school and build them up with the new things I learned from 5A. It was very difficult to find the right parts and piece them together to create the “perfect” essay. On the other hand, I was able to learn the necessary skills to converse with the authors in the text, From Inquiry to an Academic Writing, by Stuart Greene and April Lidinsky.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

Though I’m still developing my legacy, I like to think that most people who know me, regardless of how well, consider me a person that can put a smile on nearly any face. From my time in high school as photo studio assistant getting babies to giggle on camera to my work as a personal trainer cracking jokes to help clients through the worst parts of their workouts; I learned that a little laughter can improve any situation. While this is a fairly simple impact to have on people, I do believe that it’s a powerful one. My own experiences with bereavement, chronic ill health and periods of poor mental health have shown me the value of a person that puts in the effort and time to get a smile out of someone. Though happiness is a pretty fleeting…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. Navigating the twists and turns of life can be confusing and extremely frustrating without someone to guide you. With a strong role model in your life, everything can instantly become simpler. Personally, my older sister is and always will be my role model. My sister has taught me and still teaches me different ways to cope the the burdens of life and how to be an independent young woman. My older sister has taught me: don’t take no for answer - if you want something you fight to get it, life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies - turn the bad into the good, and people may differ in opinions from you, but that doesn’t mean that you should stand silent.…

Most parents teach their kids to be strong, independent, individuals. However, most of the things that young adults learn are from their sibling’s advice. There has been many situations where my parents will give me advice on something and I won’t take that advice until one of my siblings step up and give me the same advice. When siblings are leaders in your eyes, you want to grow up to be just like them. However, siblings can also be followers.…
