It is fairly common for young children to be asked what they want to be when they grow up. I can remember being asked that many times when I was a young child. I would always give the same answer, to be a nurse. I can not remember the one defining moment, in my life, when I made that decision. My Grandmother was the biggest influence in choosing this career. She would always express how proud it would make her, if I pursued a college education and became a nurse. She lived vicariously through me, and I was perfectly fine with that.
I began nursing school at the young age of 19. I knew little about life, let alone how to save someones. Although I was young, I had a passion for helping others. I could not think of a better way to be of service to people in need, than to become a

I chose nursing because I wanted to make a difference in peoples lives. Nursing has impacted my life much more than I could have ever imagined. I have watched the life cycle from birth to death and have helped out in the middle. I have laughed with patients and cried with family members. I have developed unbreakable bonds and lifelong friendships. All the while, pursing a career that I have grown to love. The textbook role of a nurse only scratches the surface of what nurses truly do. “A nurse is a healthcare professional who is focused on caring for individuals, families, and communities, ensuring that they attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and functioning.” (Crosta, 2015, para. 7) The realistic role of a nurse is not clearly defined and varies by the individual. Every nurse is different and has different areas and levels of experience. Nurses learn from every situation, whether it be good or bad, and are often shaped by these experiences.
