In today’s society, educational resources come in many forms, the majority of these are digital resources. These are often in the form of e-texts, PDFs, online lectures, instructional videos, and more. Having these resources available means that more people can access learning materials and continue their education. Learning online means that you can learn at your own schedule, you can study in between daily responsibilities, as long as you have access to a computer and internet you can study anywhere in the world. The cost of learning online is also significantly cheaper than receiving a higher education on campus this means that it’s more accessible for people in lower income areas to receive a higher education. Learning online is different from learning in other environments, mostly due to the flexibility of hours and units that you can study at a time but also the way we’re taught. Educational theorist Jerome Bruner believes that “the role of the teacher should not be to teach information by rote learning, but instead to facilitate the learning process. This means that a good teacher will design lessons that help student discover the relationship between bits of information. Informational websites are a great way to access information however, when using websites, I need to be careful of the information given. If using information from an official website (e.g. https://www.qld.gov.au) often the information will be credible and correct, whereas using other informational websites and online information I should always validate my source meets the criteria and is reliable and correct. The criteria to follow when checking for credible sources are; to check the accuracy of the information, check the authority of the author, to ensure the authors objectivity to the subject is reliable, to ensure the information is current, and ensure that they are covering the topic extensively. Websites like Quora are question and answer based websites that are peer reviewed and evaluated. Any person can answer your questions even if their answers are incorrect, whereas at times professionals in the field of your question can answer with accurate and credible knowledge. Over time edits can be made and further information can be given to answer the question more accurately and keep it current. These types of websites are a great way to get a base answer to your question to potentially open other avenues for further research.
