Upon graduating high school, I enrolled in San Jacinto College to pursue a career in the field of computer science. This quest was short lived as I learned that a higher education required much more tenacity, patience, and self-discipline than high school. The absence of these characteristics in my personality generated failing grades. I decided to quit school and work full time. Thirty years later, I found myself with a long history of what I call “go nowhere jobs”. Once I learned all aspects of a position, I would be moved or would ask to be moved to other positions or departments. Employers would grant a lateral move but they never offered more authoritative positions, such as office manager or department head. Thus, I began to feel overwhelmed …show more content…
Advancement in this type of career depends on the ambitions of the individual teacher and educational degrees, such as certification, bachelor, masters, doctrine. In infant childcare centers, the basic education prerequisite for a preschool teacher position is a high school diploma and early childhood education certification. An associate’s degree is necessary for Head Start programs. Associate’s degrees include Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.), and Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T). Preschool teachers are routinely required to have a bachelor’s degree (“Becoming” n.d.). Currently, I am enrolled San Jacinto College to achieve a degree in the Associate of Arts in Teaching (ATT) Program. Courses for this program will transfer to a university where aspiring teachers can achieve a bachelor’s degree. Internships are available in this field which will ascertain hands-on experience. Professional skills a preschool teacher must possess are the ability to listen, conduct a presentation, and speak clearly. Developing excellent skills in writing, social understanding, time management, and observation are essential to achieve a well-maintained classroom environment (“Preschool”
