Second, organized fundraising event to help poor families in Ecuador by providing them with food and clothes. However, as I went to the transition process from high school to community college and then to a four-year institution, I also began to help low-income students in their transition to college by providing information and assistance in the college application process. As a graduate student, I would like to conduct research on the disparities between the objectives of education policies and the actual outcomes of such policies in developing nations. The region of focus for my investigation would be Latin America. This research will allow me to identify the possible errors in the implementation process, or inadequacies of the policies to address issues in education. The knowledge gain will allowed me to make policy recommendations or design education policy that are more pragmatic to the condition of developing nations.

Please identify any special circumstances for consideration that pertain to your application for scholarship (i.e. special family needs or responsibilities, unemployment, extreme job demands/time commitments, unexpected financial loss, and/or any other unusual recurring expenses or related burdens). 1750

I was born in Ecuador. I move to the United States at the age of eight and I have lived in Plainfield New Jersey ever since then. My parents did not graduate high school, but they understood the importance of education. When I was a little girl, they would tell me that I have to go to college so that I may have a better life. Thus, I was very adamant about my decisions of earning a Bachelor’s Degree. However, as a low-income student, the financial constraints of my family led to me attend community college after high school. I graduated with an Associates Degree in Business Administration and with the help of a scholarship I was able to successfully transfer to New York University. On May 2016, I will become the first one in my family to graduate

Another unfortunate obstacle is that Latinas don’t ask for help academically or personally and the struggle can get to the point where Latinas have no choice but to leave school and go back home. Usually, Latinas do not ask for help during the college application process or when they are already in college and having difficulty with their classes(4 Obstacles that Latinas Face in Education). Latinas feel like they have something to prove and if they ask for help, it feels as if they are saying I’m not smart enough and I can’t do this on my own. They are taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness and prefer to try and figure it out on their own to not have to deal with others. In addition to not asking for help in their classes, Latinas are less likely to ask for help when dealing with mental health issues like depression and suicidal thoughts.…

As immigration rates increase Hispanic and Latino students will continue to grow in population in today’s society, and “despite some progress over the past three decades, Hispanics continue to be underrepresented at all levels of higher education relative to their representation in the U.S. population” (Perna, Li, Walsh, Raible 146). The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) states that Hispanics “represented 14% of all high school graduates in 2004-2005, but received only 11% of associate’s degrees, 7% of bachelor’s degrees, 6% of master’s degrees, 5% of first-professional degrees, and 3% of doctoral degrees in 2005-2006” (as cited in Perna, Li, Walsh, Raible pg. 146). At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…
