The Importance And Values Of Education

Improved Essays
I consider myself a very ambitious, studious, and responsible individual who understands the importance and values of an education. Nelson Mandela once stated that an “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I strongly believe that it cannot only change the world, but it is the most powerful tool an individual can possess. This tool is what not only completes our toolbox, but it is what allows us to properly use all the other tools that we possess and that are at our disposal. These tools allow us to change the world in many different ways; such as curing many diseases through the discovery of new medicines, the discovery of new and innovative ways to help maintain a prosperous environment, and it even …show more content…
I am the son of two educators who understood the great importance of education and who worked diligently to successfully instill in me this understanding. I was born and raised here in Lea County and growing up in an area that is all about sports is a very hard thing to do when you are not athletic. Because of this I was never very popular among my peers. Even though sports were never my forte, I still “played” football only to stand along the sideline for every game where I would only get in for the occasional kneel down at the very end of the game. This never bothered me though because what I was good at was school. The one place where I did standout was in the classroom. I loved football and cared a lot about Wildcat Football, but I understood that it was only a game and what mattered most was my education. Knowing this, I strove all through school to do my best to be able to attend college to further my education. I knew that the only way I could follow my dreams was by pursuing a higher …show more content…

I was a National Honor Society member throughout high school and kept up my grades while participating in Advanced Placement (AP). Honors, and dual credit classes. Another year has come and the past and yet again Nevada has made its presence known; but not in the way it wants. Nevada, as keeping in tradition, has for the third year in the row ranked last among all states and Washington DC in education. Now this won 't come as a surprise to many, with the lackluster funding, and scandal that continuously define Nevada 's education system. Yet nevertheless, this isn 't the kind of news Nevadans want to hear. And with the current debate over Core Curriculum, and the several education-related initiatives on this year 's 2016 ballot; the conversation over education has never been so relevant.…

“Sports...is seriously underestimated by educators, who see sports as competing with academic development rather than a route to it.” As I described, in my experience sports in my school did compete with academic development as did a variety of other social factors. I would suggest that if sports are to be a part of a well rounded education, then athletics should be optional to all students, not just the select few. It is no wonder introductory education would be socially divided, and students marginalized when at its core, the structure is flawed. Graff asserts that “the sports world was more compelling than school because it was more intellectual than school, not less.”…

Sports Have No Place in Higher Education While college student’s pile up debt to cope with sky rocketing tuition, and universities are battling immense budget shortfalls; institutions of higher learning continue to waste vast amounts of money on sports programs that in no way relate to their mission to provide an education. As schools turn away scholastically qualified students and provide diminishing financial aid to those accepted, they dole out full athletic scholarships to less qualified applicants who are less likely to graduate. Colleges and universities should devoid themselves of costly sports programs and put an end to athletic scholarships. Some schools have already recognized the immoral and unsustainable economic path they are on and chosen to recapture their moral compass by putting money previously allocated for sports programs into student services and fee and…

Two of the most important values that weave themselves through my identity as an educator are balance and relationships. Balance, to me, is keeping everything in perspective and demonstrating that there is rarely one perfect solution to any problem. Relationships demonstrate how everything is connected – content areas, my students, their parents, me, the classroom environment, the school itself, and the list continues. Both balance and relationships are vital to whom I am as a teacher, and both play themselves out through my beliefs about the purposes of education and assessment and what my classroom and teaching will look and sound and feel like. Education is such a powerful tool, and many people around the world would sacrifice so much to…
