At the first thought of the occupation ‘midwife’, people often cringe and give a weird look. What most people do not understand is exactly what a midwife is. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “They act as primary care providers for women and newborns. They provide wellness care, educating their patients on how to lead a healthy life by discussing nutrition and disease prevention.” One reason midwives desire midwifery is to help soon-to be mothers and their babies. The idea of becoming a midwife is a very positive thing, however one major controversial is abortion because life begins at conception, abortion can have a bad psychological outcome, …show more content…
The father is just as responsible and affected as the mother. Dr. Theresa Karminski Burke presents this situation by saying that “Many men have reported post-abortion problems such as feelings of grief, helplessness, guilt, sexual dysfunction, substance abuse, self-hatred, fear of relationships, risk-taking, suicidal behavior, depression, greater tendencies toward becoming violent and angry, and a sense of lost manhood. When either a man or a woman carries emotional baggage of an unresolved abortion into a subsequent relationship, it can cause trouble in subtle and even dramatic ways.” One huge negative that comes with abortion is that a couple is likely to split up due to indecisiveness with the baby. One of the two may want an abortion, while the other wants to keep the baby. The abortion right was legalized in 1973 when abortion was allowed in 30 out of 50 states. The legalization became possible because women have a freedom to choose due to the Bill of Rights. In contrast, Willke says “It is necessary to outlaw certain choices. Using the ‘freedom to choose’ excuse can also be said as ‘the choice will harm an innocent person.’” Although abortion is legalized in the United States, God’s law prohibits any type of murder. The documentary “The Business of Being Born” is an eye-opening film in which home births and midwifery are compared to the aspects of having a hospital birth. Not only does the film focus on these very important pieces to the overall birthing experience, it also portrays similarities and differences between giving birth in America in relation to countries worldwide. With that being said, if one is unfamiliar with any type of birthing experience, one may feel this film is strictly biased towards home birth as the overall message of the movie depicts that for most low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancies, a midwife and home birth is the safest and most cost effective way to have a baby. In terms of comparing obstetric care in the United States to countries worldwide, it very clear that changes can be made.…

As any social issue, abortions are one of the many topics that everyone seems to have an opinion on. According to the 2012 Merriam-Webster dictionary, an abortion is, “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation--miscarriage, the induced expulsion of a human fetus, or the expulsion of a fetus by a domestic animal often due to infection at any time before completion of pregnancy.” (Elliot) Abortions; like every controversial issue, will most likely never be agreed upon by the human race. In the midst of the controversy, two groups have arose.…

Midwifery has fascinated me from an early age. The process of how something so minuscule can grow into something so beautiful as well as knowing that as a midwife I have played a part to bring that most beautiful thing into the world excites me. Having the chance to provide that support through pregnancy, to the birth and then postnatal stages of a special time in a person 's life and guiding them through it is what draws me to become a midwife. In my spare time I have researched midwifery and arranged a placement for two days in a maternity unit at my local hospital.…

Abortion has been around for quit sometime now, and its support is only getting stronger. Advocates of abortion emphasize one’s ability to have the choice of whether that person wants to keep the baby or not. They believe that the person that was conceived is technically not a human being yet, and is a person once the mother has given birth to the child. Because they believe that the person they are aborting is not a human, it is then okay to end its life. They make arguments such as having the option of abortion will help victims of rape, incest, or if the person is just not ready to have a child.…

One health risk is psychological damage to mothers who had abortions. Chittom and Newton (2016) reported that “sadness, depression, guilt, anxiety, numbness, and shame are just a few of the psychological effects common to women who had abortions.” According to “Should Abortion be Legal” (2016), a study done by BMC Magazine reported that women who had abortions often have higher anxiety levels and are 154% more likely to commit suicide than other women. The Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology reported a study on the effects on men whose partners had abortions and it found that 51.6% had regrets, 45.2% felt sadness, and 25.8% experienced depression (“Should Abortion be Legal,” 2016). Chittom and Newton (2016) note that Pro-Life activists often explain the long term emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical trauma after the procedure as post-abortion syndrome, which is not officially recognized by the medical world.…

The holy scripture, which is the blueprint of Christianity, speaks against any form of murder. God values all forms of life, and according to the Bible, human life begins at conception. The book of Jeremiah 1:5 states that, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” This verse and others buttress the point that human life starts right away, therefore termination of pregnancy at any point of gestation is murder. God’s plan for humans might be different from ours.…
