Race is referred to the idea of categorizing human species into groups that shared physical and genetic traits, such as the skin color, facial features and even the hair texture. Based on the “Sorting People” activity that I’ve done, I found that I did poorly on the test. I got only 5 out of 20 questions right. I am actually quiet surprised by this result. I always think that I can accurately identify someone’s race because I have lots of multiracial friends, but after I took this test, I learned that my whole perception is wrong because people are more diverse than what I expected. Implicit bias is the attribution or actions that people make unconsciously towards other races. Implicit bias is also automatic and fast. People with high level of implicit racial bias will show less warmth and welcoming behavior towards races other than their own. Researchers have performed a test called The Implicit Association Test (IAT), where in the test, the subjects have to shoot people who is holding a weapon. The results shown that subjects were more likely to shoot a Blacks target as opposed to the Whites in the ambiguous situation. This happened because most of the subjects have implicit bias towards the Black race without they realized. The similar result can be also seen nowadays where polices are more likely to shoot ambiguous Black man compared to White. The stereotypes will cause the stigmatized people to develop self-fulfilling prophecy. Self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that causes the estimation to become reality. When the stigmatized race sense that the society doesn’t treat them equally, they will start to behave the way that the society initially expects them to be. For example when the society aspects Black or Hispanic to be hostile and violent, they will then treat them differently. The society will avoid having any contact with them, treat them unfairly or even verbally mock them. These actions will then make them feel depressed, and causes them to behave aggressively towards the society and thus causes the initial estimation to become reality.
To really understand the points, lets think of a situation where a black man is trying to find a job and have to go for an interview with the manager of a company. Manager with implicit bias will less likely to give positive evaluation for the candidate because of the pass experience the manager have, where the society always thought that black is incompetent and unskilled in doing work. Because of that, the Black man does not get the job, thus the man will not have the opportunities to develop the skills that most of the employers seek and causes the self fulfilling prophecy to
