The author of this piece Elizabeth Layman, PhD, RHIA, CCS, FAHIMA was expressing concern about how the implementation of the electronic health records and constant change in the health care delivery system have caused changes in the nature of work in the Health Information Services (HIS) Departments. She figured that Health information professionals cannot rectify these changes by working harder because that would only bring stress and exhaustion; however health information managers and directors adapting to assist all departments to work smarter would be the best way.

The Application of Goal Settings

By means of working smarter Elizabeth Layman suggested that “leaders can examine their departments ' alignment to achieve organizational goals at four different levels which include re-engineering, restructuring, work redesign and job redesign”. According to her re-engineering will enable leaders of HIS to give a second thought to the business and system of all departments and by so doing, they will be able to scrutinize the mission, structure and policies of HIS. Restructuring which increases organizational efficiency and cost effectiveness is mainly about changing the organizational structure, such as reporting lines or the composition of functional units.
