Communication In Disaster Response Plan

There are seven elemental steps, that officials need to take in the future, to improve how they communicate with the public. These seven elements include, a communication plan, information coming in, information going out, messengers, staffing, training and exercises, and monitor, update and adapt. A communication plan takes on several forms, “planning for communicating in disaster response focuses on collecting, analyzing, and disseminating timely and accurate information to the public.” (Bullock, 2016, p. 614) Communication plans include rosters of local and state media, protocols for monitoring media, circulation of information and evaluating effectiveness. The communication plan in the recovery phase is similar to the disaster response plan in nature and also must provide protocols for collecting, analyzing and circulating information. Much of the information during this time will come from the government and other relief agencies, and the plan will place a premium on delivering the information necessary to the public. Communication plans need to include the following in order to be efficient, Goals, Objectives, Audiences, Tools, Messengers, Timetables, and Evaluations. The public wants to hear from someone in authority and therefore this person should be an elected official whenever possible, such as a mayor, governor, county administrator or city manager. It is important that the appointed official work in advance with what types of information will be delivered, what protocols are followed and how to proceed with information updates. Involving elected officials and a agency director in migration and preparedness communication will help prepare in communicating in a disaster response and

    A noticeably strong proposed solution is to focus on preparing the citizens of disaster prone areas with the knowledgeability of how to reconstruct after a disaster as well as how to better prepare for the chance of a catastrophe striking.
