For snowbirds, flocking towards the Gulf of Mexico for warmth is a must. Our northerner friends love to come on down for some salt water therapy and a kiss from the sun. But we don’t always have tourist friendly weather. Take hurricane season for instance. With its destruction and its whirlwind of power, Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating hurricanes in the history of the United States. In 2005, this category five hurricane affected the whole coast, displacing many. My family was one of many to evacuate and return to no home. Hurricane Katrina happened to be the most costliest natural disaster on record, with one hundred and twenty-five billion dollars in damage. Along with hurricanes, we can easily experience a tropical storm as well. Warm coastal waters, light winds and moisture in the air are all ingredients needed for this to form. We also deal with heavy rain at times, along with flash flooding. If you live along the coast, chances are your summers are very hot and humid with the chance of a tropical depression brewing. We suffer sometimes, physically or economically. Sadly, our health can suffer as well. Warm water temperatures can lead to Vibrio infections. You could easily get this while swimming, fishing, etc. This bacteria can enter into the smallest little cut on your body and wreak major havoc, sometimes leading to necessary amputations and death. As the weather warms and summer nears, we are warned each year the seriousness of this bacteria and precautions we can take. Unfortunately, you can also contract Vibrio by eating raw
