However, the purpose of Dieppe was to test the German defence. When Canada was planning to go to Dieppe to battle the Germans, they underestimated the amount of German troops, the new technology that the enemy had such as more powerful tanks that were quick and able to fire from a far distance, and a new type of German machine gun that was more powerful then the Canadians weapons. Canada thought that with their troops who had little training with weapons would be enough to take down the powerful German army. This was important because although Canada had sacrificed 916 troops just to test the strength of Germany. In a way, this battle paid off because Canada got a "feel" for the Germany army. This was beneficial because it showed Canada new ways of improving their army so that when they did go to future battles, Canada would win (Veterans Affairs Canada, 10). Furthermore, Canada had learned that their weapons were nowhere near as good as the Germans weapons were. Also, since the battle happened near water in broad daylight the troops were "sitting ducks on their boats". They had no choice but to jump out of the boats and seek refuge in the water to swim with their heavy equipment to safety. This prominent battle was significant because it tested the German army’s strength and taught the Canadian army valuable lessons which benefited Canada in the Normandy battle. Dieppe helped with technological innovations and Canada was able to prove their loyalty to the Soviet Union. Even though the Canadians lost at Dieppe, they used techniques from past conflicts, to win victoriously in
