One in eight women is affected by breast cancer, which has no cure. Next to lung cancer, breast cancer is the second largest killer of women in the United States (Breast Cancer: MedlinePlus (n.d.). Although breast cancer is much more prevalent in women, men also are affected by this disease. According to Komen.org (2014), ?findings from a large randomized clinical trial showed that taking Tamoxifen for an additional five years (10 years total) further reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence and death? (para.7). As a result, young premenopausal women who cannot take aromatase inhibitors are increasing being treated with Tamoxifen for more than five years. The downfall to taking Tamoxifen for long periods of time is that it increases the risk of serious health effects that include endometrial cancer, blood clots in the lungs, and impact fertility in premenopausal …show more content…
Ganz uses randomized controlled trials that reveal that Tamoxifen therapy increase the rates of hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal discharge. Consequently, the observational studies revealed that these same symptoms do not have a statistically significant impact on patients? quality of life, as measured by standardized, self-report questionnaires (Ganz, 2001). Results from Ganz?s data from descriptive longitudinal studies, cross-sectional comparison studies, and randomized controlled trials that use a placebo will be used in the final project paper to discredit several myths about Tamoxifen therapy as well as document those symptoms that increase in frequency as a result of Tamoxifen Adjuvant Therapy. Thus will reveal how this therapy impacts the patients? quality of
