The Impact Of Stereotypes On Personal Behavior

1. Thinking about everything we have read, watched, and discussed this semester, what were the one or two things that really stood out or had an impact on you?
One thing that stood out from the semester to me was how apparent cognitive dissonance is in our everyday lives and in most of the decisions, we make. It made me more aware of the decisions I make and the justifications for those decisions. Although I may not be thinking of it consciously, I know it is at play when I am making certain choices.
Stereotype threat had an impact on me as well in respect to the way I interact with others. I am more aware of the varying stereotypes that I hold in regards to myself and how they can affect my behavior. I found it interesting that it can affect

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

The two topics that resonated with me were Micro-aggression and the privilege statements. The statements made me realize that we take certain things that are so “normal” for granted. Simple privileges that I take for granted do not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from and that I press the handicapped button to open the door because it’s convenient. Like most of us college students that live on campus we have a meal plan but what about if you live off campus or simply aren’t in school at all? I never think about the individuals that aren’t in the same predicament as me.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Throughout my college career, I have had many memorable achievements and gained lots of knowledge on valuable lessons. Yet there are specific lessons and achievements that stand out. Last year, I had the privilege of being asked to join Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society at UCR, which recruits the top 20% of all undergraduate students. By joining and becoming actively involved with the organization, I was fortunate enough to be offered the position of Vice- President of the organization, which is the most meaningful achievement I have had so far.…

During this class and the projects that we completed I became very aware of the impact of power differentials, oppression and discrimination. I also learned how it affects many individuals. I learned that not only are the individuals affected but so are their families, communities and their overall culture. Social justice takes into account race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental capabilities, spiritual and religious orientation, social class, geographic locale, veteran status, and occupational and familial environments just to name a few. This class as well as my project allowed me to see many injustices that I may not have noticed before I had taken this class.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination has been a core topic in social psychological research in an attempt to understand the origins of biases and impact on groups and individuals (Dagner & Dalege, 2013). The terms prejudice, discrimination, and stereotype, are often used mutually in daily dialogue. Stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination are biases that contribute to the creation of social inequality in the society (Fiske, 2008). Most often people are biased against other individuals outside of their social connection, displaying stereotypical behaviors, showing prejudice and discrimination. Formerly, individuals are more explicit with their biases, however during the 20th century, it has become less socially acceptable to exhibit bias, prejudice, and…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

Composition II has been an interesting class that has helped me to adapt and grow as a writer. I came into this class not sure what to expect, besides the norm of writing papers, but even then I wasn’t sure what kind of papers I would be writing when I enrolled. It turned out that this class covered many topics as we worked on writing research papers for a topic of our choosing. In the time following the start of our assignments, there was a lot to learn about how to research, working with others, the mechanics of writing, and becoming professional in how we explain the information we’ve gathered. When it came to research, I wasn’t quite sure where to start.…

I am very thankful for taking this course as I feel I have vastly improved in multiple areas of my communication. I had never taken a course that involved writing a paper and then presenting a speech on it to the class. It was either one or the other, not both. That is what intrigued me to take this course before the semester started. For myself great strides were made in my ability to convince readers through the toulmin model, learned in this course.…

As quickly as this quarter has gone by, there has been plenty of things I've learned. My favorite, being metacognition. Although, metacognition may have had absolutely nothing with this course, it seemed to be a very important tool for processing essays. Not only that, the process of defining the word “metacognition”, always managed to stir-up a good educated confabulation. Most importantly, this course has given a lot of confidence in my writing process.…

The Power of Collaboration “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is process, but working together is success” (Henry Ford, Brainy Quotes). Throughout the first couple weeks of college, I expected to figure out everything out on my own without help from anyone else. However as it may be the case in some circumstances, I can surely tell you that classes like English 100Y definitely does not hinder the concept of teamwork or collaboration. Throughout the semester we have been exposed to a variety of group based activities and challenges. These collaborative assignments help benefit the students with the capability to attack challenges in the future whether it be in another class or life itself.…
