The unrestricted approach to the industry exemplifies why the field abandoned so much of the public sphere, and induced a system in which the authors say “has consistently fallen short of the public interest”, (pg.156) many forms of media seem to barely even hide the fact that more profitability is their only guiding hand. The homogenization taking place in so many aspects of media echo those feelings, but the internet, in spite of big media’s best attempts at controlling it too, has continued to provide noble resistance to these practices. Too big, and too accessible for these conglomerations to get their hands on everything, it has represented not just a beacon of hope, it is largely responsible for these companies having to now reevaluate their old strategies, especially in the wake of AOL Time Warner’s demise. Awareness over how the web works today has heightened. While this type of content may mascaraed as something that stirs debate, all they do in actuality is fuel conflict. Actual debate cannot be had unless people are armed with actual facts. Real debate aims to bring people together, not push them apart. Debate gate is geared for people who believe that far too often on traditional social media, when well-informed, well researched stances on current events are posted, they are greeted with nothing more than vitriol from others, who say that they don’t want to see those kinds of things in their newsfeed. For people who don’t want to see those things when they log onto social media, they can stick to Facebook, join Debategate when they want to use social media to expand on their intuition more. There will be those who still prefer traditional social media, but we believe in the fact that a large enough portion of society is ready for a better way to interact about what’s going on around them, we believe this makes our company profitable without having to become involved with the kind of media conglomerates that would contradict everything our medium sets out to
