Technology's Negative Influence On Human Communication

During the last decade, technology has shaped people’s lives, changing the way in which we communicate. We are on an era where you can send videos, audios, images, or even live stream from your cell phone to the world, to any other person in the world. We all can share our thoughts and work to the world. As a consequence of this some people have considered social media and the Internet to be a great development in human communication, whereas, some other people have realized that technology is a bad influence on our human relations. Nevertheless, it is impossible to deny that these new ways of communicating have negatively affected the way in which we interact. Nowadays, smartphones have become a part of the human’s body because people would not even dream of going out without their cellphones. As Sherry Turkle, in her article “The Flight from Conversation”, says: “At home, families sit together, texting and reading e-mail. At work executives text during board meetings. We text during classes and when we’re on dates.” These are the new kind of meetings we are having nowadays. People have started to have the need of being connected so as not to feel “alone.” But instead, we isolate ourselves from having real human interaction. As people feel safe behind the screen, they rather stay there than have a real conversation; loneliness is predominant on today’s society. When they are on a real conversation, they feel vulnerable, weak and exposed since they might not know what to say or how to respond to other person’s comments. There is a big difference between having a real conversation and texting. In the first, you understand the other, you learn from their gaze, face expressions, pauses, awkward moments, or their voice tone. While, in the second, you may only learn new information about their life but not how they really are. In addition, Sherry Turkle, in his artixcle “The Flight from Conversation”, says: “In today’s workplace, young people who have grown up fearing conversation show up on the job wearing earphones […] we are together, but each of us is in our own bubble, furiously connected to keyboards and tiny touch screens.” As consequence of this, people around twenty years old do not know how to lead a conversation. They are not used to it. They, perhaps, have never experienced the feeling of starting a conversation with an unknown person, or know how to handle an awkward moment. People’s loss of social skills is a major problem for today’s society and needs to be dealt with. A responsible use of your cellphone or devices is the key to solve this
