American Culture And Social Media

Throughout the past decade American culture has adapted to utilizing Social media as a popular form of communication and information. In Brian Williams’ “Enough About You”, Williams believes that American culture has become motivated by the desire to celebrate one’s self, which he explains as the User-Generated Generation. Social media has been beneficial to American culture in terms of communication but it has also been harmful in terms of health and safety. It has improved methods of communication and applications designed for communication purposes, by expanding the range of available delivery channels. On the other hand, social media has resulted in an unhealthy concentration of the ownership of mainstream commercial media, as well as an increase in the opportunity for cyber bullying to occur. In conclusion to the “24 Hours: Unplugged.” Study conducted, the ICMPA concluded “American college students today are addicted to media, describing their feelings when they have to abstain from using media in literally the same terms associated with drug and alcohol addictions”. Social media plays an important role in young Americans becoming addicted to expressing themselves in both private and public situations. The leading social media site Facebook, with more than 1.23 billion monthly active users, has impacted American culture drastically. According to (thenextweb.com) “Of those, daily active users passed 757 million on average during December 2013, and the number of monthly active mobile users hit 945 million”. With over 100 million users joining every year, Facebook is continuing to ruin American culture by effecting young Americans. Americans in current culture will most likely own multiple social media accounts on various sites
