This body of written work will go over why juveniles are treated the way they are in the justice system and how race has even taken effect on the outcome of these individuals. According to “The Sentencing Project” 42.4% of juveniles on life without parole that are convicted of murder are African American while only 3.6% of white juveniles face life for murder. To measure the Disproportionate Minority Contact or the (DMC) the Relative Rate Index or (RRI) is used, which measures the difference in white youth and youth of color. The goal of the RRI is to get rid of the un-equality between races in the juvenile justice system. Among all juveniles black youths are more likely to be transferred to adult facilities. This shows that the juvenile justice system has no remorse or hope for African American youth. Even though there has been a drop in arrest nation wide, black youths are still twice as likely to be arrested than white youths and mainly for nonviolent crimes.
