Poverty is a major issue for single mothers throughout the nation and world with reports stating 82% of people in poverty are women or children (Brady & Burroway, 2012; Harris, 1993). Even in affluent nations, single mothers are more likely to be poor than others (Brady & Burroway, 2012). Extensive research has been done to determine what factors lead to these alarming numbers and this research has led to various programs to help mothers who deal with poverty. One such program, located throughout Wyoming is CLIMB Wyoming, which helps single women and their families to escape poverty through job training, placement, parenting skills, and life skills development. Based on data from the inception of the program, participants use of governmentally subsidized healthcare decreases from 32% at intake to just 11% in the two years after program completion (CLIMB Wyoming, 2015). In light of recent health care issues and debates, this is a significant and noteworthy decrease in dependence on tax-payer based health care. Moreover, participants’ use of the federal SNAP (food stamp) program is decreased by 19% two years after the program and graduates decrease their need for foster care, public child care, and become active taxpayers in their new careers. In addition, 76% of graduates are employed two years after completion as compared to a 24% employment rate prior to the program. The CLIMB Wyoming program has an 89% completion rate and graduates increase their average monthly wage from $1,038 to $2,492. CLIMB Wyoming is an adult education endeavor that has helped numerous single mothers and their families over the past 30 years. Women suffer disproportionally from poverty and poor job prospects throughout the United States and CLIMB seeks to improve this situation for a variety of women (Broussard et al., 2012). This poverty can lead to greater issues with stress, depression, and anxiety and is often difficult to overcome independently, but this program allows for women to gain knowledge toward a better job and personal life. From mental health care to life and parenting skills, CLIMB Wyoming seeks to give women the tools needed to be the leader in their home and give their children more opportunities than they may have had. Adult education is exemplified in this program that serves women across the state of Wyoming. Hopefully, the program can continue to find funding to serve this portion of the population long into the
