Problem Statement Maslow (1943) suggested that an individual’s first motivations are for food, safety and shelter. When those needs are met, love and belonging are the next foundational needs. Only then can esteem and self-actualization be approached. Students who are at-risk often flounder at the bottom rungs of the hierarchy, and without those foundations being met, it is difficult for them to concentrate on or be motivated my academic accomplishments. Mindfulness tools, like breathing exercises and meditation, are methods for improving general well-being and controlling emotionality. By employing a mindfulness program, it is anticipated that students will manage stress better and increase their motivation to complete academics.
Purpose Statement The proposed research project institutes a mindfulness program in a classroom in a residential facility in efforts to improve the academic motivation of students. The development of the mindfulness course will be beneficial to future students in the residential program, it will be of ongoing use to the students, and they will learn new self-management techniques. The study is exploratory and limited in scope, so it functions as an indicator of connectivity, but not generalizability.

Informed consent will first be approved by the program, then by the school district, prior to providing parents with the documents. Prior to signing participation agreements for their children, parents will watch a video demonstration of mindfulness exercises. We will discuss the potential benefits and harms to their respective child(ren), and the ways the research will be conducted to minimize risk to subjects will be explained (Wester, 2011).
