The emergence of modern media technologies has revolutionized the way humans conduct their daily lives. The evolution of media technology has and will continue to impact the information we consume, how we consume it and how that content is created. Being and individual born in the 90s, I have witnessed massive innovation take place on a global scale that has impacted the media technologies I use. As a toddler, much of the media entertainment I was exposed to was derived from clunky TV’s, un-intuitive MP3 players and CD players, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, and CD ROMs. In the 18 years that I have been alive, technological innovation has seemingly increased at an exponential pace. One of my passions is to create and listen to music. A new media technology I have widely integrated into my life is Apple Music, a music streaming service that enables me to explore and listen to the content that my favorite artists are churning out. The popularity of music streaming as whole has had a tremendous impact on how people access and listen to music. Moreover, music streaming has been extremely disruptive in the music industry. Before the Internet, the vast majority of music was listened to through CDs, cassettes and the radio. My mother Raj, a woman who grew up in the 60s, recalls, “during [her] childhood much of the music that [she] was exposed to came from the radio (Tewathia, 2014).” Today, I am able to access millions of songs from thousands of artists all at the convenience of a super computer I keep in my pocket, while my mother had to tune in and listen to whatever content was being funneled through the limited radio stations she could …show more content…
On the other hand, my mother was only exposed to content and forms of entertainment that were developed in India. Her choice in music was inevitably influenced by the lack of diversity that existed within the cultural environment she grew up in. “There were only a select few radio stations,” she recalls, “and there was really no way of listening to any English music through the radio (Tewathia, 2014).” When I am using Apple Music, I can essentially access content from anywhere in the world and have exposure to international artists. Given the dynamic of a conventional radio, my mother did not have that luxury. She could only listen to whatever was played, and what was played was content created in India. “For most of my youth, there was only one radio station I could listen to. What played on the radio was split between news, music and other segments (Tewathia, 2014).” In addition to being able to stream music, Apple Music users can stream music videos, and multiple radio stations as well. Apple Music acts as an intuitive and convenient portal to all things music.
