Although the money that the government has promised will ease the immediate pressure on the beleaguered NHS hospitals, which are heading for a record deficit of £2.2bn this year (Campbell, 2016), this will mean likely cuts to social care, training, and public health budgets would undermine any benefits. This will mean that the NHS will fail to deliver sufficient care without adequate social care provisions and improvements in the public’s health. Local government budgets have already been cut dramatically over the past five years, and there is no doubting the knock-on impact this has on the NHS.
