The Impact Of Liquid Water Exploitation On Mars

Improved Essays
On September 28th of 2015, NASA officially confirmed liquid water existing on Mars. Water is pretty common here on Earth, so why is this such a big deal? The big deal is that this is one of the biggest discoveries in Mars history. The discovery of liquid water, provides limitless options from colonization, to the fact that there may be life there now. But how did the media impact this disclosure?

Normally space discoveries never get extremely popular. I thought to myself what was so different about this one. I conceded that since life on Mars has been such a popular topic for so long, everyone must be sitting on the edge of their seats to find the answers. Google had one of their “doodles” for their homepage about how water was discovered

The connection between my article Mars, the red planet and The Martian by Andy Weir is that Mark Watney uses Mars’s two moons Phobos and Deimos to help him travel to the Pathfinder so he can communicate with NASA for help. When he travels at night he can’t see any of the landmarks like the craters to help him know the direction he is going so he uses Phobos and Deimos to help him travel. “Mars doesn’t have a magnetic field. So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east.…

Many have asked the question why doesn't Mars have oceans? A recent breakthrough discovery has confirmed that liquid water does exist on Mars. This means there is the potential for life to exist here. However, this water is very minimal compared to previous levels of water found on Mars. A study done by Geronimo Villanueva and Michael Mumma of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center reveals that Mars used to have at minimum…

Thought it was a joke? Like a sci-fi scene from the movie Red Planet, but it was not. Mars One, a non-profit foundation led by a Dutch National and Entrepreneur planned to beat NASA in getting people to the Red Planet to establish a human settlement by 2027. With an estimated $6 billion for the first mission and $4 billion for every next manned mission, the idea is to send a crew of four every two years beginning 2027, steadily increasing the colony’s size.…

Mars otherwise known as the “red planet” because of the iron oxide surface on the planet that gives it a red color coat, is one point five hundred and twenty four astronomical units away from the sun. That’s one hundred and forty one point six million miles from the sun making it the fourth planet from the sun. It can easily be seen from Earth because of its red color. According to Nasa, “Mars is named for the ancient Roman god of war”. The Romans chose the name God Of War because it “resembles the color of blood”.…

Life in the solar system has been explored and debated over centuries, with Mars being the greatest subject of interest. This is due to the existence of water ice on its surface, and water vapour in its atmosphere. The existence of water is pivotal in the exploration of Mars, as it may hold vital information regarding the history of the planet. Scientists have implemented the ideology to ‘follow the water’, as the existence of water allows for life to grow, and more importantly, exist.…

A recent study on Mars’s geology causes a paradigm shift to researchers’ perspective of the red planet. Felsic rocks that thought to not exist on Mars are now identified. Overall, these findings alter the understanding of the geologic complexity and magmatic activity of Mars. Prior knowledge of Mars’s geology was rather simple; consisting of one type of rock formation in contrast to Earth’s diverse and complex geology. Felsic rocks such as granite, are common in subduction zones on Earth (Wray et al., 2013, 1013).…
