Oda Nobunaga was almost spoken of in legend on the battlefield and was also nicknamed the “Demon King.” The political system of Japan during this time was set up in the form of a pyramid. The Shogun, which Oda Nobunaga brought to reign over Japan, was at the very top. The Shogun was essentially a military commander that ordered many men into battle. Next came the Daimyo. The Daimyo were lords that operated under the power of the Shogun. Below that was the Samurai. The Samurai were fierce warriors that led the fight during battle. After that was the bulk of this social pyramid, the Peasants. The Peasants were the commoners that worked to keep the empire going through tough labor such as farming. But there was one that frustrated just about everyone that was on the lower end of the social pyramid. This policy was known as the Sword Hunt. A Sword Hunt is basically a form of gun regulation. Its purpose was probably to snuff out violence. According to Japanese rulers such as Toyotimi Hideyoshi, only the Samurai class is allowed to own a sword. Swords were the main type of weapon during this time. For this it was a big deal when a Sword Hunt happened. So I am sure you must be asking yourself, were Sword Hunts all that effective? No they really were not. There’s two reasons for this. One, the defiant groups of people who knew how to wield a weapon were not giving up without a fight. Two, people just went on to learn a martial art. Thanks to martial arts the only weapon you needed was your body. In the end Sword Hunts would not prove to be very
