Everyday I experience the impact that immigration has had on my life and the entire west Michigan community. Whether it be through seeing my fellow classmates in school that are children of immigrants; or, by driving by the restaurants and stores owned by immigrants, I am able to see, firsthand, the tremendous influence immigration has had on the west Michigan community. Two of my best friends happen to be either an immigrant or their parent was an immigrant. My friend Nathan’s family immigrated to the United States from South Korea before he was born, but his parents lived in South Korea while they were growing up. Immigrants are essential to the economy because they lead to higher economic growth. Immigration leads to higher economic growth because immigrants complement rather than substitute for native-born workers, with capital moving accordingly to maximize the available labor. Immigrants and native-born workers are usually in different job markets, so they don’t compete against each other for jobs. According to Diana Furchtgott-Roth, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, low-skill immigrants are prominent in occupations such as janitors, landscapers, tailors, plasterers, stucco masons, farmworkers, dishwashing, lawn care, and house care. On the other hand, low-skill native-born workers usually find work in service and sales jobs (Hackbarth). This shows that immigrants and native-born workers primarily work for different jobs, therefore immigration has a positive effect on the economy. The same applies for high-level jobs for immigrants and native-born workers. Also according to Diana Furchtgott-Roth, high-skill immigrant workers prefer to work as research scientists, dentists, and computer engineers; while, high-skill native-born workers tend to work as lawyers, judges, and education administers (Hackbarth).
