During the 1970’s and 1980’s the primary issues that people were focusing on was the disappearances, imprisonment and the exposure to torture that their loved ones were enduing thus focusing less attention to issues that had to do with political, social or individuals economic rights. The history of human rights takes a drastic shift, as media becomes a fundamental factor to exposing inhuman treatment. As the media begins to portray human rights violations it also addresses humanitarian disasters thus bringing awareness to everyone about current issues that could be harming society. These issues may include climate change, global market meltdowns, threats on human populations such as the water crisis, energy shortage, pandemics, forced migration and transnational terrorism along with others (Cottle and Cooper, 21). TAN’s strives to create equal human rights for everyone; therefore they strategize in order to make this possible. TAN’s job is to target human rights perpetrators, commanding foreign governments, the world community as well as working with the victims who have been abused (Cardenas, 104). Some strategies that international institutions, non-state actors, and individuals have used to combat repression and violence are for instance naming and shaming which is, when a they expose the violations that a state has done in order to shame the state, thus expecting for the state to become humiliated, therefore provoking it to change its behavior and act appropriately to the accusation of violent crimes. TAN’s relies strongly on its allies therefore in order to make the public aware and educate them on the violence that’s happening they depend on documents, witness testimonies, and intense images of abuse to portray the reality.
