The impact of hope on the choices that we make are incredibly significant. Hope defines one’s way of life, creating the logical reasoning to make decisions. It is an element in life that we hold on to, as hope gives life meaning and purpose, propelling us to thrive and morally grow. It is also used as an mechanism to assist in going through difficult hardships, teaching us determination and perseverance. In Alfonso Cuarón’s film Children of Men, the audience observes life in a hopeless world and how it impacts everyone’s quality of life. Without hope, one’s motivation would be non-existent, and decision making would be brutally careless. Protagonist Theo Faron, an ordinary resident, lives with the perspective of living to exist, not thrive. However, that changes when Theo recovers his lost hope for the first time, which the audience witnesses character change. From the impact of hope being so significant, many abandoned their distraction divide and fight one another, changing their perspective on how life should carry out. Nobody cared if the baby was born an immigrant; all that mattered was the baby herself, and that hope was found again. Throughout the film, protagonist Theo’s worldview changed exponentially, as now he miracle he hoped to have hope for came true. He finds his sense of purpose of himself and tries as hard as he could to survive, even when he felt dead inside. Contrasting Theo before the knowledge of Kee and after, the audience will notice the considerable difference in Theo’s character and facial expressions.
