Some believe that the existing criminal laws are adequate to address domestic violence and expanding government policies and programs is unnecessary.
On the other hand, the reaction to violence against women is met with the notion that there should be stronger government action (Robbins & Weissman, 2012).
There are several activist groups, legislators, and conservatives that oppose the VAWA because they claim the act has done little or no good for real survivors of domestic violence, while its funds have been used to fill feminist coffers and to lobby for feminist objectives. The socially conservative Family Research Council says the real abuse of the reauthorization of VAWA is how much it will waste taxpayer dollars (Rayfield, 2013). o What do people with higher incomes think?
Those who are not aware, have never experienced, or know the extent of violence a person has endured will not understand the importance of legislation or government interventions to decreasing violence against women. Research examines public opinions regarding domestic violence, specifically violence against women and found that majority understand and accept that violence against women is wrong and should not happen (Carlson & Worden, 2002).
