The website 4chan.org has had a rather grim reputation since its inception. The reason for this is users on the 4chan messageboards are granted total anonymity, not even having a recognizable profile or username, allowing them to say whatever they like usually without consequence, and posts only remain for a limited amount of time. It is important to note that 4chan users are not limited by national borders, and come from many developed nations. As a result it’s grown as a home for many online activities, some innocuous, others unsavory and even dangerous. Perhaps most notably, the /pol/ Board has become a haven for the “alt-right”, a political ideology similar to Neo-Nazism/White-Nationalism. 4chan’s cyberattacks range from so called “raids” (usually Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) or forming Swastikas in online games, generally ones targeted at children), to a more recent project known as Operation Google. It has evolved such that we need to redefine the way we think of and approach Cyberbullying, as it’s grown beyond the schoolyard. I can only speak for myself, but when I hear the word bully, It feels childish, and I think of a husky schoolboy shaking down his youngers for their lunch money. In today’s world cyberharassment is a tool used by hate groups, and it’s not beholden to borders, much less the boundaries of a schoolyard. Before we can consider proper solutions to Cyberbullying and online harassment, we need to rethink how we term and define cyberbullying in order to give it connotations that accurately describe the scale and grimness of online harassment in the digital age.
