In the case of this paper, communication technologies is seen to have a mostly negative impact in the teenagers’ lives. In the first place, communication technologies affect the teenagers development as it negatively influences their behavior. The communication technologies furthermore negatively impact the teenagers’ development as they convoke an existential anxiety and identity distress. Not only are teens impacted in their development, but they are also impacted in their drive to socialize. Influenced by communication technologies, their social capital or their participation in society will become a more destructive one. Some teens decide to use the communication technologies as a platform for cyberbullying, a negative way to participate in society as it affects everyone in the party. Other teens will have a disconnected interaction with real life society since they have been influenced by online social interactions which are different from real life interactions. One last negative impact communication technologies has done in teens, is the way they use those platforms when socializing. Some teenagers have been too distracted to have complete social interactions as they are often times too involved in the use of the communication technologies. With the point on how communication technologies affect the development of teenagers we see how, thanks to the SNSs, they have been able to socialize better. Xie gives the point on how “posting comments on friends’ SNS pictures can increase the time spent with friends in person” (232), she demonstrates how thanks to communication technologies, the teenager might have a better social life. Additionally, on the point of how social capital impacts teenagers, we see how communication technologies allow teenagers to have a more involved social capital. Xie explains this by saying how, “SNS adoption and mobile personal talk can not only increase teenagers’ close ties with friends, but also jointly promote their civic engagement that their social capital is positively impacted” (232).
